Summer Craft: Hot Rocks

Last summer we did a fun kid-friendly activity that helps get
the kids outdoors and enjoying their surroundings.

HOT ROCKS!

When I found the idea on this blog, I knew it was the perfect cousin activity.
The property around my parents' house is full of wide open spaces and
room to roam - something we don't get a lot of here in Southern California.
So while we're there on vacation, I like the kids to get out and enjoy being outside.
The fun thing about hot rocks is that you have to find them first.
So, we took a nature walk and the kids collected rocks in a bucket that I lugged around.
I had each of the kids find 2-3 flatish rocks to use as their canvases.
The smooth, flat rocks work the best.

Pop the rocks into the oven for about 15 minutes at 350 degrees on a foil lined cookie sheet.
As the title of the craft denotes, the rocks are hot when they come out of the oven.
So, handle them with hot pads and make sure the kids understand that the
rocks are HOT and that they shouldn't try to pick them up with their bare hands.

We layed out a few beach towels, gave each child their own spot, one rock at a time,
and a bunch of unwrapped crayons and let them go to work.
They all loved the magic of watching the crayon melt as they designed their rocks.
And they were a fun piece of art to leave for Grandma's garden.

Hot rocks are a fun summertime craft that will keep you all occupied
for an afternoon and can be repeated whenever the mood strikes!

Cool!!! This is exactly why I love reading your and others' blogs... so much inspiration for fun things to get the kids involved! Never would have thought to melt crayons onto a hot rock, but I know my kiddo and his cousin would looove doing it. With how hot it's been, maybe we can set them in the sun for an afternoon instead of in the oven :)
Thanks for sharing!

OMGosh! We were actually going to do something similar to this craft next week! The kids asked to collect rocks and glue googly eyes on them and give them faces! GREAT MINDS THINK ALIKE!!! :)
