New Mom Care Package Gift Idea + Free Printable

I already shared my recipe to my Amazing Dark Chocolate Lactation Cookies earlier this week and now I'm back to share how I packaged up this yummy new mommy treat with a care package full of my favorite postpartum/newborn things.

Let's be real, the 3-4 weeks after the baby is born are overwhelming. No matter how many kids you've had and how many times you've done it, newborns are weird little creatures that literally suck the life right out of you. They are amazing and adorable too, don't get me wrong. But I've always wondered why none of the moms I knew warned me about postpartum.

Oh sure, everyone shares their bloody birth stories, but no one says - "Oh, by the way, you'll have to wear mesh underpants with frozen maxi pads strapped to your nether-regions for at least a week afterward, all while continuing to bleed, and learn how to nurse your newborn on little to no sleep, while you sweat for no apparent reason. Good luck!" Nope, no one said that to me once!

So, if you know soon-to-be first-time mom, give her a little heads up. Don't scare her, but let her know that postpartum isn't a Saturday afternoon picnic at the beach and she might want to reconsider being induced a week early and keep that baby inside for just a little longer. Then, put together a little care package for that new mama to enjoy that will make those first few postpartum weeks a little less overwhelming.

Like I mentioned before, a friend of mine recently had her second set of twins and I made her the yummy dark chocolate lactation cookies to help keep her milk supply up. I packaged them in sets of two in the square zipper snack bags from Walmart and then I added a cute little sticker to the front to cute them up!

I'm sharing the cute cookie printable sticker with you so that you can package them up nice cute as a gift for a friend too. They come eight to a page and they are the perfect size for the square snack zipper baggies. You could make them into a cut file and let your Silhouette or Cricut cut them out for you, but I just cut them out by hand.

Then, it's time to put together a box of your favorite postpartum/newborn/baby things that will make life a little more pleasant for the new mama. I love it when another mom shares a favorite product that saved her life during those first weeks home with a newborn. So, I find a lot of joy in gifting the things that I love to a new mommy.

Back when Grace was born I shared 15 Products Every Mom Needs and I included some of them in the gift box for my friend. I think that everything I included in this new mama gift box comes from that list.

In the gift box I included:

If you use a white noise machine in the baby's room, then this is a must! We all know that unless you're the first baby, most likely you're taking most of your naps on the go. This lets you take the comforting sounds of home with you wherever you need to go.

The adorable burpcloths catch all the spit that happens. They have a cute jersey knit print on one side and absorbent terry cloth on the other. They are soft, cute and functional.

If you're nursing a baby, you need these. They are amazing and will save your poor, sore nipples. Yep, I just said nipples.

Yep, I just said nipple again. Did you know that if you have a wool allergy or sensitivity that lanolin won't help your sore nipple problems because it's made from sheep's wool? True story. Nipple Butter is a plant based balm that contains essential milk proteins and contains no mineral oil. You're welcome.

I still swear by swaddling. Since babies aren't supposed to sleep on their tummies due to the increased risk of SIDS, swaddling is really the only way a newborn will stay asleep for more than 10 minutes. Also, a true story. Let me give you the deets on why - since I feel so passionately about it.

WHY SWADDLE?
The safest position for a baby to sleep is on her back, but newborns have a built in reflex called the Moro Reflex (aka startle reflex) - read more about it here. It makes sleeping for longer than like 10 minutes pretty hard for a newborn unless you're holding her the entire time. Also, a true story.

So the ergobaby Swaddler - unlike the burrito method with a plain blanket- swaddles the baby with her arms in the "hands to heart" position instead of down by her side. It also has a hip positioner strap to keep her legs in the ergonomic "frog-leg" position and helps avoid hip dysplasia.

So, please don't tell me your baby doesn't like to be swaddled and in the same sentence tell me that she only cat naps for 10-15 minutes. Swaddle your baby with the ergobaby Swaddler and it will change your life. Also, swaddling works best to calm the Moro Reflex if it is introduced at birth. So, if you make it part of your sleep routine, then swaddling will help signal to your newborn that it's time for sleep. So do it. Stop telling me your baby doesn't like to be swaddled. Because I don't believe you.

Sorry, I didn't mean to get up on my swaddling soap box, but it just had to be done.

Now, my friends new twin babies have three older brothers. And there is nothing worse than being the oldest child and everyone is obsessed with the new babies and you feel like no one remembers that you're even around. I'm not speaking from experience at all.

So, whenever I give a postpartum gift, I always include something for the older siblings. It's kind. Just do it. And include some of these Big Brother Stickers from Lil' Luna while you're at it!

So enjoy making the dark chocolate lactation cookies, packaging them with cute stickers, and then putting together a box of your favorite things to gift to a new mama. It will brighter her day - I promise!

Amazing Dark Chocolate Lactation Cookies

One of the things I worried about most each time I brought my new baby home if they were getting enough breast milk. Since they aren't eating from a bottle and you can't see exactly how many ounces they're consuming, I was always worrying if they were eating enough, if I was producing enough, if I would continue to produce enough. It's a very stressful situation for a breastfeeding mom!

So, when I received lactation cookies as a gift with my second baby that were delicious and were supposed to help with milk production - I was like, "Where were these with my first baby?!" And with my third baby I decided to make my own so that I could keep them on hand whenever I needed a quick snack.

Fast forward four years and to my friend having her second set of twins last month and I knew that I wanted to put together a care package that included some yummy lactation cookies. I can't imagine having to worry about producing enough milk for two babies! She breastfed her first set of twins (who are just 6 weeks older than Grace), so I knew that she would love something yummy that would also help with milk production.

The brewer's yeast, flaxseed and oatmeal in the cookies are all natural galactagogues - or foods that help increase milk production. So you get a yummy treat and you can help give your milk production a boost. Plus, I use dark chocolate chips which make them pretty much a vegetable, right?

And if you're not trying to lactate, you can omit the brewer's yeast in the recipe and make a regular batch because the cookies are delicious and you'll find the rest of your family trying to eat them too! A note on brewer's yeast - it can be kind of bitter. So, look for a brand that tells you it has reduced bitterness or is mild tasting. I like TwinLabs Genuine Brewer Yeast which I found my local health food store.

{DARK CHOCOLATE LACTATION COOKIES}

INGREDIENTS:
2 tbsp milled flaxseed
4 tbsp water
2 c. flour
1 tsp salt
1 tsp baking soda
4 tbsp brewers yeast
2 eggs
1 cup of butter (softened)
1 c. sugar
1 c. brown sugar
1 tsp vanilla
3 cups old fashioned oats
2 cups dark chocolate chips

DIRECTIONS:

1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.
2. Combine the water and flaxseed and allow the mixture to sit for 5-7 minutes.
3. Sift together the flour, salt, baking soda, and brewers yeast in a medium sized bowl.
4. Beat together the butter and sugars until light and fluffy.
5. Add in the eggs, vanilla, and flaxseed mixture until well combined.
6. Slowly add in the sifted flour mixture.
7. Fold in the oatmeal and dark chocolate chips by hand.
8. Use a large spoon (or large cookie scoop) and drop cookie dough onto a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper.
9. Bake 12-15 minutes, cool, and enjoy!

I like to bag 2 cookies together in the square zipper snack bags from Walmart and put the in the freezer. Then, when I want a treat, I can pull them out and the cookies stay fresher in the freezer. After I bag them in pairs in the snack bags, I put the snack bags in a gallon freezer zipper back to keep the freezer burn at bay.

Come back tomorrow to see how I used these double dark chocolate chip lactation cookies to create a fun care package full of my favorite new mom things - plus a cute printable!

TOO Cute Tuesday: Linky Par-Tay! #388

JT and I had an adventure last week and it was so much fun! We got to check out the new dive coaster at Knott's Berry Farm - HangTime! It was so fun to be there when the ride debuted and be some of the first to ride it. Well, I should say that JT was one of the first to ride it . . . I was too chicken! He said it was amazing, that it's his new favorite roller coaster and he can't wait to ride it again!

Refresh and Renew: Skin Regimen and Glen Ivy #fastlivingslowagaing

You all know that I love Glen Ivy Hot Springs. It is the perfect place to refresh and recharge and "treat yo' self". I've started to realize how important self-care is to our overall health and since my return to Glen Ivy back in November, I've begun making self-care a priority in my daily life. It's not easy! I love taking care of and serving others and it brings me a lot of joy. However, I am realizing that if I don't care for myself, I'm less effective in all other areas of my life.

{FAST LIVING - SLOW AGING}
On my most recent visit to Glen Ivy Hot Springs I had the opportunity to listen to Dr. Claudia Aguirre, in connection with Comfort Zone Skin Care, share with us about stress, aging, skin care, health and longevity. She is neuroscientist and skin care expert and she shared with us how our skin is a mirror or window of our mental well being and physical state. So we need to take care of all aspects of our self, manage stress, and get more sleep!!

The Skin Regimen line of skin care, created by Comfort Zone, is clinically proven to reduce the effects of stress and lifestyle aging on both skin and mind. Since our lifestyle affects the speed of our skin and mind aging, Skin Regimen formulas target the most common stress-related signs to restore the optimal conditions for healthier, glowing skin.

{LONGEVITY SOLUTION FACIAL}
Glen Ivy Hot Springs uses the Skin Regimen line in their Longevity Solution Facial and it is AMAZING! This revolutionary treatment rejuvenates the revitalizes the skin with a gentle lactic acid peel along with specialized deep and focused massage techniques. The facial softens wrinkles, plumps your complexion, and your skin feels vibrant and energized.

This was my first facial EVER and I didn't know what to expect. My esthetician explained to me what she would be doing during the facial and highlighted all the benefits the facial would offer to my skin. It was AMAZING! and I enjoyed every minute of it. She used the Skin Regimen line of products and I loved the natural ingredients and the aromas each product offers. She also asked if I had any skin care concerns and offered advice and products that could help with my issues.

The Microalgae Essence was one of the products used during the facial and it smells so good!! I use it on a daily basis now and it helps to keep my skin balanced with optimal hydration.

She also suggested that I add the Retinal Booster to my weekly skin care routine. She said it would help with the monthly breakouts on my chin. She recommended that I used 2-3 times per week for a an intensive renewing action.

{THE SOLE FOCUS MASSAGE}
My mom has always told me that the feet are a gateway to the rest of the body and the Sole Focus Massage at Glen Ivy focuses on the idea that full body relaxation can be achieved by focusing on the feet. For a full 50 minutes the massage therapist uses Zone Therapy and Skin Regimen lotions and oils to improve circulation, calm the mind, and relieve tension throughout the entire body.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Sole Focus Massage. I've had reflexology massages before, but this was so much more! I have chronic pain in my feet because of plantar fasciitis and the Sole Focus Massage not only helped my feet to feel awesome, but the rest of me felt pampered and relaxed too. I highly recommend it - especially if a full body massage isn't your thing. With the Sole Focus Massage you get all the benefits of massage and you get to keep your clothes on!

{ENJOY THE DAY}
Come for the Longevity Facial or Sole Focus Massage and stay for a full day of relaxation. You'll want to make sure you have enough time in your day to receive your special body and/or facial treatments and be able to enjoy Glen Ivy's 19 different pools, Club Mud, steam rooms and outdoor saunas. You won't regret treating yourself to a full day at Glen Ivy Hot Springs!

Extra! Extra! Disney's Newsies Coming to La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts!

If you even mention the word "Newsies" at my house all three of my kids will simultaneously break into singing "Open the gates and seize the day! Don't be afraid and don't delay!" It's no joke. Since the movie's release in 1992, I have been a HUGE fan of the Disney motion picture and have raised my kids on the soundtrack and the film. When my nine-year-old heard that Disney's Newsies is also a hit stage musical and that it is coming to La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts in June 2018, she freaked out!

Set in New York at the turn of the century, Disney's Newsies tells the story of charismatic newsboy Jack Kelly, his rag tag band of teenage "newsies", and their battle with publishing titans Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst over the price increase for their livelihood - "papes". Jack rallies the newsies not only from his borough, but the newsies from across the entire city. Disney Newsies will have you singing along and wishing you could join Jack and his newsies in their cause!

Disney's Newsies will debut at La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts Friday, June 1, 2018 and run through Sunday, June 24, 2018 - closing out the 2017-2018 season for the iconic La Mirada Theatre.

TOO Cute Tuesday: Linky Par-Tay! #386

How was your May the 4th? We celebrated in style in our best Star Wars-wear. This is still one of my favorite outfits that I've made. Her paper bag skirt is getting too small and she'll definitely need something bigger next year. I wonder what I'll come up with next! Any ideas? Send them my way!
