Discovery Science Center: The Science of Gingerbread and Indiana Jones

We had the opportunity to check out The Science of Gingerbread at
the Discovery Science Center this month and it was AMAZING!!
I was so impressed with all of the entries and they take up the entire museum.
It is truly fantastic.

After my kids saw all of the entries JT decided that we need to build something
to enter next year and I agree that it would be a lot of fun.
There were dinosaurs, pyramids, UPS trucks, carousels - so many unique ideas.

As part of The Science of Gingerbread the kids have the opportunity
to build a race car out of cookies and candies and race them
on a Pinewood Derby-like track.
It was so much fun!

It was cool to see the kids choose their "car" parts and how the different
pieces worked and didn't work.

In addition to The Science of Gingerbread, DSC is also running

I was fascinated with all of the memorabilia and information that we got
to experience during the audiovisual tour.

Each person gets their own headphone/video console set
that let's you interact with the exhibit through videos, a scavenger hunt,
and narration through the entire exhibit.

At the end of the exhibit JT tried his hand at the chair lift
and he enjoyed the challenge.

Both of the kids loved being archaeologists themselves and digging
for treasures and artifacts too.

The kids thoroughly enjoyed the museum and we can't wait
to go back with my husband because he would go crazy for the Indiana Jones exhibit.
It was Isabella's first time at the Discovery Science Center, so we had to
try out some of the permanent exhibits like the bed of nails.

And of course the giant pin wall is always a big hit with the kids!

We even got to see Santa!

The kids were excited to take home a bag of ingredients to make
their own gingerbread over the Christmas break.

Handmade Gift Idea: Framed Holiday Hand Embroidery

Today I've got a quick and easy handmade gift that is fun to make and receive.
I made a Halloween version and loved it so much that I decided I needed to make a Christmas version when I found this fabulous Christmas fabric hiding in my hoard that I bought on clearance at Joann for $2 a yard a couple of years ago.

Supplies:
Frames
Spray Paint
Christmas Fabric
Transfer/Tracing Paper
White Embroidery Floss
Embroidery Hoop
Embroidery Needles
Fabric Marking Pencil
Glue Gun

I found these great frames at my local dollar store, but they were the wrong color, so I used a little white Krylon spray paint and they were ready to go!

Step One: Cut a piece of fabric that is about 1″ bigger on all four sides than photo glass.
So for my 4×6 frame, I cut a piece of fabric that was 5×7 and for my 5×7 frame I cut a piece of fabric that was 6×8.

Step Two: Use a fabric marking pencil to mark the corners of your glass size so you know the size area that you’ll have to work with. I used a fabric pencil because I had one, but I’ve used a white crayon in a pinch.

Step Three: Using your computer create text to be embroidered. I did this by making a 5×7 box in Photoshop and then centering the text within that box. Place the design over tracing/transfer paper and draw over the design to transfer it to the fabric.
It will look like this when you’re done!

Step Four: Stretch the design onto your embroidery hoop and start stitching.
I used a back stitch, but any of your favorite embroidery stitches will work great.

Step Five: Remove from the embroidery hoop and iron out the kinks and wrinkles.

Step Six: Cut a piece of cardstock the exact same size as the glass.
Then place it on the back side of the embroidery and hot glue the edges to the cardstock – pulling slightly – to keep it taught.

You’re done!
Flip it over and frame it up!
I like to keep the glass behind it for sturdiness.
You can put it in front too, but I don’t like the sheen it gives to the embroidery.

Now you’ve got a cute handmade gift to help share holiday cheer with friends!

The Twelve Symbols of Christmas: {Christmas} Advent Countdown

A couple of years ago I helped the 16 and 17 year old girls
put together the Twelve Symbols of Christmas for a special family in our congregation.
It was a sweet spin on the Twelve Days of Christmas.

We brainstormed the symbols together and then shopped at Target
for physical representations of each symbol.

We really lucked out in finding inexpensive ornaments and other festive items
for our special gift.
However, we had a really hard time finding a good representation of the Nativity.

So I made one!

And we framed it,
and wrapped it along with the rest of the symbols and left the secret gift
on our special family's doorstep with the instructions to open one gift each night.
The Star
A heavenly sign of a prophecy long, long ago - The shining hope of mankind.

The Evergreen Tree
The second color of Christmas shows everlasting light and life. The needles point up to heaven.

The Bell
Rings out to guide lost sheep back to the fold, signifying that all are precious in His eyes.

The Candle
A mirror of starlight, reflecting our thanks for the star of Bethlehem.

The Bow
Tied as we should all be tied together in bonds of goodwill forever.

The Candy Cane
Represents the shape of the shepherd's crook, used to bring lost lambs back to the fold.

The Wreath
A symbol of the never ending eternal value of love… having no end.

Red Ornament
The first color of Christmas, symbolizing the Savior's sacrifice for all.

The Gift
God sent His Son – the greatest gift of all.

The Poinsettia
A Mexican legend tells of a little boy who had nothing to give the baby Jesus. As he prayed, a flower grew at his feet. He quickly picked it and gave it to Jesus.

The Angel
Announced the birth of our Savior.

The Nativity
For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

Attached to each small gift was a numbered envelope and inside was a
little explanation of the precious Christmas symbol.

You can get your 8x10 print of the nativity and the list of all the symbols with their
explanations right HERE!!!!!

And I think it would be so awesome to go entirely handmade with this
and make something to represent each symbol.
