Summer Watermelon Tours at Tanaka Farms

Disclosure: We were hosted by Tanaka Farms with other media for a watermelon tour. All opinions are my own.

If were ever a kindergartner in the Irvine Unified School District, then you've
probably been on one of the fun tours at Tanaka Farms. Even though I've had 2
kids go on kindergarten field trips to Tanaka Farms, I had never been one of the
tours. In fact, I am kicking myself that I don't take better advantage of having
such a great source of fresh produce that is picked daily just down the road from
me. I was really excited when Mary of Let's Play OC arranged a watermelon tour
at Tanaka for other local media.

The kids were really excited to go for a wagon ride and take a tasting tour of the
farm on our watermelon tour. The tours are offered daily at various times,
depending on the day, during July and August. They last about 50 minutes and
they end with taking home your very own watermelon.

I really enjoyed the rural atmosphere at Tanaka Farms. As an Iowa farm girl I
sometimes miss the wide open farm lands living here in Orange County. It was
good for the soul to just look out over the farm as the tractor bumped along and
my kids had an experience that they'd never had before. We had fun listening to
our guide tell us about the land, the different types of crops they grow, why they
rotate crops, and how they use the same products and natural methods as
certified organic farms to keep the pests from eating all the delicious produce
instead of harmful pesticides.
Along the way we stopped and tried some of the delicious produce they grow
on the farm in addition to watermelon. Our tour guide invited all the kids to join
the "Try It All Club" and they all raised their right hands and took an oath to try
it all! And they did! Even my pickiest picky Isabella tried a bite of everything! It
made my heart so happy! My favorite was the sweet corn that you could eat off
of the cob raw! I think the kids liked the corn and the Bugs Bunny-esque
carrots the best. They weren't too sure about the cilantro and the cherry
tomatoes, but they each gave it a good college try.

Our last stop was the watermelon tent where we tried different varieties of
melon. It was so delicious! I can't remember that I watermelon with so much
flavor! And have you ever seen a yellow watermelon? It looked like a giant slice
of pineapple and it was my favorite. And you should have seen knife skills of our
tractor driver! He sliced and diced those melons like  nobody's business. I wish
I would have taken a video of how quickly and easily he carved up each melon.

No one left the tent wanting for melon - we were all stuffed! I enjoyed seeing the
kids try a few of the melon varieties for the first time. JT and Isabella liked the
seedless watermelon the best, but I think it was too close to call for Grace as she
devoured each of them with the same veracity.

After we were done stuffing ourselves with watermelon, then we got our very
own watermelons from the field! We didn't actually pick the watermelon. Our
tour guide handed us one that had been harvested that day. But we were out in
the middle of the field and we had to carry it back to the wagon, so I'm saying
that we picked our own watermelon. The kids were very happy and couldn't wait
to get home and have their own watermelon for lunch and to share it with daddy
who wasn't able to come.

So, don't follow my poor example and fail to take your kids on such an exciting
and memorable adventure - especially if you live 10 minutes from Tanaka Farms
like I do. The watermelon tours run through the end of August and if you come
on the weekend, you don't need a reservation - they run every hour from
9:30 am - 2:30 pm.  Check the Tanaka Farms website for weekday
reservation instructions and weekend tour times. You can also call the farm for
group rates and reservations.

The price for the watermelon tour is $18 for adults and children. Children 2
years and under are free. The are also group rates available. After your tour,
don't forget to take advantage of the $2 off a purchase of $10 or more in the
Market Stand. There are all varieties of fruits and vegetables available for
purchase as well as some other delicious fresh foods like breads, tortilla chips
and salsa. They had the BBQ out and were roasting sweet corn when our tour
finished up, so we decided to pick up a few to eat for lunch and we also took
some fresh sweet corn on the cob home to use for the BBQ at Grandma's house
that weekend. It didn't even last that long. The kids ate the raw sweet corn
straight off of the cob before I could BBQ it the next day!

Are you a farm girl or a city girl?
Do you think your family would like an
experience like this?

Harry Potter Tote Bag {Tutorial}

Hooray! It's that time of year when Marissa at Rae Gun Ramblings runs her
Happy Harry Potter series to celebrate the days leading up to Harry's birthday on
July 31st! I'm so excited to be participating again this year. It's no secret that we love
Harry Potter and I can't wait to share with you my tutorial for this adorable
Harry Potter Tote Bag!

(Be sure to go read to the end of the post to enter an awesome Harry Potter
prize pack giveaway!)
To make this Harry Potter tote bag you will need:
Rotary cutter
sewing machine
Peach/beige fabric
Hogwarts red and gold/yellow fabric
black fabric
Harry Potter Glasses template
Heat n' Bond Lite

For the body of the bag, you'll need fabric cut in the following
colors and dimensions:

Beige/Peach fabric
2 pieces - 18x14

Black Fabric
1 piece - 8x14
1 piece - 3x14
1 piece - 8-9x14
1 piece 4x15

Red fabric
1 piece - 10.5x18
4 pieces - 2.25x7

Yellow/Gold fabric
1 piece - 6.5x14
5 pieces - 2.25x7

Ok, now that you have all your fabric cut for the body of the bag,
 let's put Harry's face together!
1. Take your red and yellow 2.25"x7" pieces and sew them together with a 1/2" seam
allowance, alternating red and yellow to make Harry's scarf. I goofed on this part and only
made my piece 4" long, but didn't realize it until they were all sewed together. I didn't
want to start over again, so I did what Tim Gunn says to do and made it work!

2. Fold under a 1/4" on each long side and iron. Then pin to your bag. I bumped my
scarf up 1.5" from the bottom, because the bag will "eat" that much when put together.
You won't need to do that because you will have made your pieces the right size!
Sew the scarf to the bag piece as close to the edge as you can. I call this a topstitch.

3. For Harry's hair, take your 8x14" piece of black piece of fabric and adhere a piece of
Heat'n'Bond Lite to the wrong side per the package instructions. Sketch out what
Harry's hair looks like to yours on the paper side, cut along your sketch lines, and then
adhere the hair fabric to your bag piece per package instructions. Edge stitch along the
jaggedy edges of the hair. You don't need to do the top or sides since you used Heat'n'Bond
and the other sides will be part of the seam allowance when you put the bag together.

4. For Harry's glasses take your 4"x15" piece of place fabric and adhere another piece
of Heat'n'Bond to the wrong side of the fabric. Pin the glasses template to the fabric
and cut out. Adhere the glasses to the bag body piece and then edge stitch to secure
the glasses to the bag.

Don't forget to use the template to stitch on Harry's scar! I used pink thread with a
red bobbin and I love how it turned out.

Yay! Harry's face is done!

5. For the back of the bag, you can do a solid piece, but I wanted to change it up and
do a blocked piece. So, I took my yellow 6.5"x14 piece, black 3"x14" piece and
red 10.5"x14 piece and sewed them together to make a more interesting back piece.

6. Now all your pieces are ready to put together into a bag! Put the Harry Potter face
and blocked back with right sides together, pin, and sew with a 3/8" seam allowance
on three sides, leaving the top open. Repeat with your interior lining pieces - one black
and one beige piece 18"x14".

7. Pinch and flatten the corners of each "bag" and sew a line 1 1/2" from the
point to create a boxy bottom.

Now for the fun scrappy straps!
8. For your straps you can just take 2 pieces of fabric that are 5"x26" or you can make
them scrappy and fun by piecing together different sized blocks. I cut 2 sets of pieces
that were 5" wide and varied length from 3"-6" and sewed them together.

9. Then, take your scrappy strap pieces and iron them in half with wrong sides together.
Next, open up and iron each side into the middle creaseyou create. Fold over and iron
closed do you don't have any exposed seams.

10. Now that your straps are all iron and pretty, edge stitch down both long sides and
you've got fun scrappy straps for your Harry Potter bag.

Time to put the bag together!

11. Turn your interior lining piece right sides out and slip it inside your piano/lyrics
exterior fabric so that the right sides are together.

12. Pin your straps in between the right sides about 2.5" from the sides of the bag.

 13. Sew up the top of the bag with a .5" seam allowance, making sure
to leave a 2"-3" opening for turning the bag right side out.

14. Turn your bag right side out and then push the lining into the bag and top stitch
around the bag to make it looked finished and close up the hole you left for turning.

I love how it turned out! Thank so much for joining me! Be sure to check out my other
tutorials and recipes and come back again to see what's new!

    Toasted Peanut Butter, Banana, and Honey Sandwich + {GIVEAWAY}

Disclosure: The coupons for free product, information, and gift card have been provided by Oroweat® so that I could try the product and share my thoughts and information about Oroweat® Organic bread. The opinions expressed in this post are my own and do not reflect the opinions of Oroweat®.

Sandwiches are a daily staple at our house. The kids love them for lunch,
and now that JT and Isabella are older, they can make their own sandwiches.
However, it's get kind of boring having the same old PB and J everyday, and
Isabella suddenly decided she doesn't like jelly or jam anymore, I had to
be creative and think of another variation on the typical sandwich that she
would enjoy eating while she home during summer vacation.

Of course we start with Oroweat® breads. The kids (and my husband) like the Country
Potato and I like any of the Oroweat® Whole Grains Sliced breads. I like that they have
2 to 5 grams of fiber per slice, zero grams of Trans Fat, no high fructose corn syrup,
and are cholesterol free. Plus, I think they taste delicious! The 12 Grain Bread has 8 grams
of protein per 2 slices and I am always looking on ways to sneak protein into Isabella's
diet because she is my carb lover.

So, to liven up her regular old peanut butter and honey sandwich, I turned to Elvis and
made an updated (and healthier) version of his favorite Fried Peanut Butter and Banana
sandwich. I melded Elvis's favorite with Isabella's love of peanut butter and honey
and made the Open Faced Toasted Peanut Butter and Honey Banana sandwich.
The crisp from the toastiness of the Oroweat® 12 Grain Bread pairs well with the soft
bananas. The sweetness from the honey drizzled over the top gives it an excellent flavor.

The thing is, Isabella doesn't like bananas. However, she loves this sandwich. It must
be the addition of the honey and the warm, toasty bread, that makes her forget she's
eating one of her least favorite foods. Then, she gets a little potassium, a serving of fruit,
and the protein from the 12 Grain bread and the peanut butter. Perfect!

Do you have an original sandwich that you think is amazing? Then you should enter the
Oroweat® 2016 America's Better Sandwich Contest! The sandwich genius that fills the
Oroweat® Bread up with the most delicious fillings could win a grand prize of $25,000!

This year’s contest includes five (5) exciting sandwich categories including:
      • “Open-Faced Artistry (sandwiches are works of art for the world to see, and these snacks and meals should announce their nutritious ingredients—like bright beets or tasty tuna— sans second slice);
      • “Breakfast in Bread” (these sandwiches, featuring nutrient rich breakfast favorites like eggs and yogurt, invoke images of cozy mornings in bed or boisterous brunches with friends);
      • “Creative Classics” (nutritious spins on sandwich creations that have stood the test of time, such as grandma’s club sandwich, BLT or other old-time favorites);
      • “Fueling Good”  (these sandwiches should incorporate ingredients that help boost your energy such as healthful fats, protein, fiber and iron)
      • “State Favorites” (whether it’s a well-known sandwich in the state you reside, or a must-have local dish that can transition into a sandwich, celebrate your state pride by re-creating these state favorites with better-for-you ingredients)
The sandwich in each of these categories with the highest score will win a $5,000
    category prize!

You can enter the Oroweat® 2016 America's Better Sandwich Contest from now until
August 21st and online consumer voting will take place September 26th-October 23rd.
